Understanding your target audience
Before you start your keyword research you need to understand your audience. The best way to do this is to create a list of buyer personas.
A buyer persona is what you perceive your perfect customer to look like. You create a fictional profile that lists a range of details. An example of details you may include could be:
- Job role and title
- Their typical day
- Their companies industry
- Any goals they have
- Any challenges
- How they find new information to help them improve
- Relationship status & number of children
- Their education
- Any shopping preferences
The list can go on and on. I will help you profile your target audience to help you get a real idea of who you should be looking to impress.
Taking the buyers journey into consideration
Before a user makes the decision to buy an item on a website, chances are that they have researched it before. The buyers journey places users at different stages before committing to a sale.
The three stages of the buyers journey include; Awareness, Consideration and Decision. I’ll help you identify keywords for each of these stages.
Awareness stage keywords will be phrases that people use relating to a problem. They use these keywords to understand their issues and find a solution.
The Consideration stage goes to that next step. It provides the potential solution to the problem and looks to help the users.
And finally, the Decision stage keywords. These are keywords your audience uses when they are ready to make a decision and know how to solve their issue.
Awareness – ‘lose weight’
Consideration – ‘weight loss equipment’
Decision – ‘order a treadmill’
Getting your ‘seed’ keywords
Seed keywords are very basic phrases that you associate with your website or product.
The seed keywords will generally get used when someone isn’t sure on what they need. A user may search with a seed keyword to help them get a better idea of what they need to be searching for.
Understanding your seed keywords provides the foundation to starting your keyword research. I’ll help you identify your seed keywords and then we can start finding the juicy bits!
Creating your keyword research document
Once I understand your audience, I can begin creating your keyword research document.
The keywords listed will include the following data:
- Search volume
- Estimated CPC (Cost Per Click)
- Number of results
- Level of competition
You can then use this research to optimise your website and paid search campaigns.
